Reading

We begin the journey to reading with our very youngest children through a program of phonological awareness i.e. rhyming, listening to sounds, and playing various games with words (say bear, now say it without the b). At the same time, we teach the sounds of the letters. Once these are mastered, sounds in 3 letter words are analyzed and then “written” with moveable wooden letters. Finally words are read by blending their sounds together.

Reading is about learning a code; it is not a guessing game. Once the child is proficient at reading individual words, we begin a graded program of phonetic readers. Each child goes at their own pace and has an individual plan tailored just to them.
